Customer reviewsDissapointing Quality and Performance
I ve been using B D corded electric mowers since the 1990 s. I still have a working 6 year old B D MM 1800, but with a generic blade. Apparently, B D no longer supplies the OEM blade for this mower, nor more recent ones. I was interested in a new mower, but avoided the MM 2000 for the many negative reviews on its long term reliability. On impulse I purchased the brand new BEMW213, its replacement, which I now regret. CONSTRUCTION Except for the handles and blade, this mower is all plastic, including the wheels. Plastic wheels were once used only on B D s cheaper, light use mowers. But they are now standard on this heavy duty model. I found the plastic wheels to have considerably less traction on my lawn than those I ve used with rubber tires or coverings. The BEMW213 now has only one carrying handle on top of the mower instead of the more useful two on the MM 2000. The manual refers to the underside of the body s front as a handle. It isn t ASSEMBLY You attach the two parts of the handle with bolts, knobs and a washers. Easy enough. Clips are used to secure the motor cable to the handle. Minimum instructions and illustrations tells you how to attach the rear bag. I prefer side emission of cut grass. Neither the instructions nor diagrams identify or tell you that there is a spring-loaded side cover that you open to insert a safety shield. That keeps the cover open for emitting cut grass. You start the motor by pushing the new side button while pulling the bail handle to the handlebar. You have to do both in a coordinated way, or the motor doesn t start. I don t see any performance value by adding a switch to the motor starting process. It is another superfluous addition that can go wrong. PERFORMANCE This mower stalls in rough patches in our yard the motor runs but the mower is stuck, as if in mud. This requires considerable extra effort to get the mower moving again. This problem arises from the all plastic wheels with their poor traction. I do not use the rear bag, expecting, the cut grass to be emitted from the side. But large amounts of the cut grass builds up in the rear. You have stop, lift up the rear shield, and remove the clumps of grass by hand. My older MM 1800 has an extra stiff back panel which moved the cut grass away from the rear. You are stuck with using the rear bag to avoid the mess of clearing the cut grass buildup. SUMMARY B D decided to reduce costs by downgrading the construction and using cheaper, plastic parts. That has also downgraded performance of the mower. A poorly prepared owner s manual epitomizes the lack of details to the mower s construction before putting it on the market.
